Edward Young/Artist Note:

I started drawing at the age of three, so I like to say I have a lot of practice since I am now over 50 years old.  I spent my youth growing up on a farm in the Weavers Creek section of Russell County. I attended Cleveland Elementary and Cleveland High School. In 1972, I attended Lebanon High School since Cleveland and Lebanon schools were combined. After graduating Lebanon High School, I attended East Tennessee State University, and later transferred to Emory and Henry College.  In 1979, I received an interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts degree in Art, History, and Mass Communications. I recently received a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Radford University. Over the years I have taught elementary, secondary, and college level art. I am presently the art instructor and director over the 21st Century After-School program at Lebanon High School. I live with my wife Alicia, in Lebanon, Virginia, and have a working studio at our home that sits high on a hill with a majestic view of the Clinch Mountains. We have a son, Andy, a daughter Rachel, and a son-in-law, Derek.

A few years ago I noticed some of the buildings that had been around all my life being torn down in the Lebanon area. I thought someone needed to capture the essence of what I called, “Social Landmarks.”  Some people may refer to the buildings as, “Old Hangouts.” Whatever they were called, the buildings had a certain character and charm. Being an artist myself, and having a passion for art and local history, I decided it was up to me to capture a part of the past.

While I was working on my town montage drawings, it seemed as though I could even remember how some buildings smelled inside. I could remember how good a hotdog was here, or a cheeseburger was there. Remembering the fizz of a soda mixed at a fountain in one of the local drug stores or the sound of honking car horns at the local drive-in theater may bring a smile to your lips.

You won’t see any people in my town montage drawings because I want you to insert the people of your choice, your friends, and your families. I hope you will start talking and reminiscing about how things used to be. I also hope you will share some of those good memories with your friends and especially with the younger generation. All my prints and original artwork pieces are produced on acid free paper to provide years of enjoyment for you and your families.
