About Capo's
Capo's Music Store was founded in 2009 by Amy Ball Braswell and Gill Braswell. In developing the vision for the store, Gill and Amy meshed together their interests and passions to create an shopping experience unlike any other in the region.
Art is deeply rooted in Appalachian culture. Fiber Arts, Literature, Visual Arts, Storytelling and the art of making music are all part of our culture. Capo's seeks to honor that heritage by offering a house for art in its many forms in Abingdon.
Our Core Beliefs:
Capo's hopes to foster a co-teacher/co-learner environment through our education programs. Education is essential to developing your art. Capo's seeks to provide educational opportunities for artists of all levels and types. We will be hosting events, writer's nights, speakers, performers, and players nights. We also invite local arts groups to contact us about having your meeting at Capo's.
The creation of music, the act of playing, is an art and musicians are artists. We invite local musicians to ask us about player's nights and our artists sales program.
Musical artists deserve the tools and support necessary to perform their craft. Capo's features a full line of acoustic instruments with all our feature lines made in North America. Capo's goes beyond the instruments to provide the acoustic player excellent customer service and support before, during and after a purchase. With lessons, a wide array of special events, repairs and more, we strive to make your experience the best possible shopping experience in the region. We offer a welcoming, family and player friendly environment.
Storytelling is an art-form fostered in the oral traditions of the mountains. We hope to support the art of story-telling in its many forms by offering books in three areas: Books about music and musical artists, Lyric and Song Books, and Appalachian themed works or works by writers from the region (both fiction and non-fiction).
Visual arts are necessary for the soul. Capo's is pleased to offer a small gallery that features rotating shows by local artists.
Capo's believes that businesses should give back to the community that supports them. To that end, each month Capo's will donate a portion of our proceeds (a minimum of $100) to a local non-profit and charity. These organizations will be featured on our Facebook page, webpage and in our store.
Capo's Music Store Music Store:
The colors of Capo's Music reflect the colors of the Appalachians. From the crystal blue of a spring sky , the crisp white of a fresh fallen snow, the pale yellow of a winter sun and the pale gray of a winter fog. The warm blue haze of the mountains after a rain, The moss green of a forest floor to the warm browns of the soil. The colors for the interior rooms of the house were chosen to make our customers feel at home and honor the beauty that surrou
Many people know Gill, Capo's co-owner, from his work at Barter Theatre. Capo's is pleased to have an art installation of original set pieces from Man of Constant Sorrow: The Story of the Stanley Brothers which were designed by Cheri Prough Devol. Gill originated the role of Dr. Ralph Stanley in this production as we feel truly blessed to have these pieces in our store. These pieces are featured in many rooms of the house with description and information featured in the Music Heritage Room.
Acoustic instruments are an investment and at Capo's we understand that it takes time to get to know an instrument. You need to see if the instrument fits your needs, your budget and can help you develop and grow as a player. For those accompanying the musician, but not interested in shopping themselves, we are happy to offer a lounge for those patiently waiting on the player in their lives. Our lounge also features a wide array of books, compact discs and music themed gifts. You can also pick up your Capo's logo merchandise for that hard to shop for musician or pick up a gift certificate. Or, just sit back, relax and enjoy a cup of coffee or soda with our compliments.

Meet Capo's Staff

Gill Braswell, Director of Retail Operations
A native of North Carolina, and has a B.F.A. from Shenandoah College and Conservatory. Gill has worked at many regional theatres throughout the country and has had the honor to perform at the Ryman Auditorium and on the Grand Ole Opry. Gill relocated to Abingdon, Virginia in 2002 to work for Barter Theatre when he accepted a role in Keep on the Sunnyside: The Songs and Story of the Carter Family. Gill also originated the role of Dr. Ralph Stanley in Man of Constant Sorrow: The Story of the Stanley Brothers. While preparing for these roles, Gill's appreciation for old-time, bluegrass and what some call mountain music grew over the years as did his knowledge and he fell in love with the mountains. Gill made Abingdon his home for good in 2006 when he married and moved "out on the farm" with Amy. Since leaving Barter Theatre, Gill has been an active performing musician, teacher and has worked in music instrument retail. Gill is excited to develop Capo's Music Store and looks forward to meeting everyone who comes through our doors.
Amy Ball Braswell, Director of Business Operations
Amy is a native of Southwest Virginia. She has a B.S. from Virginia Tech and a M.A.L.S. from Hollins University. Amy has worked throughout Virginia in a variety of positions from public relations and marketing, to retail sales and in education. Gill and Amy met when they were both working for Barter Theatre and she convinced him to relocate here for good. A farm girl at heart, Amy and Gill live on her family's farm in Alvarado. Amy is overjoyed to open Capo's and be surrounded by books, art and music, three of her loves.

Capo, The Store's Namesake
When developing the vision for the store, many names were batted about but one kept coming back to mind, Capo's. But you may be asking, what is a capo. In simple terms a capo enables a player to change keys and makes playing easier. Capo is also our boxer bull dog and mascot that Gill received as a gift from my mother four years ago. A capo, whether a very spoilt boxer bulldog or the tool that clips onto an acoustic instrument can be a player's best friend. That's also a goal of Capo's music store.
